Props & Set Up Time Limits

  • Props are acceptable if they do not alter the surface of the dance floor and can be easily removed following the completion of any routine.

  • If the dance floor is not thoroughly and totally cleaned in the time permitted to do so and/or if the dance floor is not returned to its original pre-performance condition, point deductions will occur.

  • For the safety of performers, any prop that is either freestanding or handheld can not exceed 10 feet in height.

  • Any type of specialty lighting or altering of the performance areas lights is not permitted.

  • Power outlets may not be available for props that require electricity. Battery operated props are recommended.

  • All props must be covered with felt, carpet or rubber on any surface that contacts the floor.

  • If the dance floor is at all damaged while sliding props or moving scenery, the studio owner/director will be responsible for all costs to fix or replace the floor. No exceptions.

  • Props are to be brought in and out of the hotel on the same day they are used.

  • Storing props in hallways or to the rear of the dance rooms is not allowed.

  • Aspire will not be responsible for props left overnight or unattended.

  • Any special requests for the assembling of props must be discussed with the competition director upon arrival to the hotel.

  • All props must be labeled with the studio name for identification purposes.

PROHIBITED PROPS

  • Fire (including candles, matches, lighters)

  • Fireworks (including sparklers) and explosives

  • Any use of animals

  • No toy weapons are permitted

  • Hoverboards and motor vehicles are not allowed.

  • No form of liquid, gel, powder, glass objects, aerosol cans of any type (including hairspray or spray paint) or similar substances maybe used that will physically alter the dance floor.

  • Water (on body, costume or prop), wet paint (on body, costume or prop), fake blood, silly string, haze or fog machines, dry ice, smoke, strobe lights, bubbles, bubble machines, candy, chalk, crushed cork, flour, corn starch, loose glitter (on body, costume or prop), Sand, dirt, sawdust, ashes or any other similar substances may not be used.

  • Any act that uses a substance that is not permitted and creates a safety hazard for performers or on the dance floor may be penalized and/or disqualified at APA Dance Challenges discretion.

  • Covering the dance floor to stage a prohibited item is not permitted.

*Special note regarding rosin: Rosin must be self-contained and cannot be applied directly on the dance floor.

SET-UP TIME LIMITS

Solo/Duo/Trios are allotted 1:00 minute prior to the performance to set up props and 1:00 upon completion of the performance to remove props (2:00 minutes cumulative)

Small/Large Groups are allotted 2:00 minutes prior to the performance to set up props and 2:00 minutes after the performance to remove props (4:00 minutes cumulative)

Productions are allotted 2:30 minutes prior to the performance to set up props in 2:30 minutes after the performance to remove props (5:00 minutes cumulative)

If prop set-up/removal exceeds these time limits, performances may be subject to point deductions.
