CATEGORIES:

*Being that every competition has different specifications, we ask that you please refer to every categories description and rules before registering your routines.

As a reminder, no more than 4 Acro tricks permitted per routine with the exception of Acro, Open and Production categories. Any routine that exceeds the amount of tricks allowed will be docked 1 point per judge per trick over the limit.

ACRO - Routine that must consist of at least 50% acrobatic/gymnastics skills incorporating dance choreography. The performer/studio is responsible for supplying their own mats.

BALLET - Routine must contain ballet technique incorporating formal classical movements. Ballet slippers only.

CHANCE TO DANCE - The Chance to Dance category is for dancers with disabilities. Routines can consist of any genre of dance and will be adjudicated for score only.

CONTEMPORARY - Routine that combines both lyrical and modern movements. Up to 4 Acro tricks are permitted.

HIP HOP - Routine that utilizes hip-hop, breakdance and street style moves. Emphasis should be on creativity, rhythm, variety of stylistic movements and body isolations. Up to 4 Acro tricks are permitted.

JAZZ - Routine that contains traditional and stylized jazz movements including leaps, isolations, turns, kicks and jumps. Up to 4 Acro tricks are permitted.

LYRICAL - Routine should display interpretation of the lyrics, emotion and content of the music, while using expressive movement demonstrated with fluidity, balance, extension and control. Up to 4 Acro tricks are permitted.

MODERN - Routine that consists of interpretive movements using modern technique such as natural movement focused on the “core” of the body with coordination between breathing and movement as well as a dancers relationship with the floor. Up to 4 Acro tricks are permitted.

MUSICAL THEATRE - Any dance routine performed to the music of a Broadway musical or a movie musical. Props and Lip Syncing are permitted.

OPEN - A routine consisting of more than one style of dance that does not fit into any other category ie: cheer, baton, partnering etc. Shoe changes are permitted.

PANTOMIME - A routine that portrays a character from a musical or movie and focuses on lip syncing, costuming and facial expressions only. Any routine with substantial choreography should be entered into the Musical Theatre category.

POINTE - Routine must include classical or contemporary pointe technique and steps. Pointe shoes only. Available to Junior Division & Up.

PRODUCTION - Routine that may contain any combination of dance styles with a storyline or theme. May include multiple ages, dance forms, props or stage sets.

TAP - Routine containing tap technique and primarily tap work. Emphasis should be on the tap sounds and rhythms created. Tap shoes only.

VOCAL - Routine that features singing to an instrumental music track. The track can not have any lead vocals on it. Background vocal accompaniments on the track are permitted. A microphone is provided for the performance.
